The client
The Community Visioning Committee has been working since 2021 to create and implement a shared vision for public spaces in Emmetsburg. Through the Iowa’s Living Roadways Community Visioning program, the committee engaged residents with a variety of public input strategies, then used that feedback to develop concept plans and identify Mural Park as the first area of focus.
Those plans have already resulted in several visible upgrades. Last year, a large patio was laid, allowing residents and visitors to sit and enjoy downtown. This year brought engaging outdoor musical instruments and beautiful planters, making the park a place where visitors can linger, listen, and play. This mural was the cherry on top with plans to add more like it in the future!
The Process
My inspiration for this mural came from what makes Emmetsburg feel like home — its community, its history, and the memories I carry from growing up here. This mural was a true collaboration between myself and the client, inspired by both community pride and personal nostalgia.
Emmetsburg will always hold a special place in my heart since it’s where I grew up. No matter how busy things get, I always make time for projects here. It’s incredibly meaningful to use my art to give back to the community that shaped me and to bring a bit of joy to the people and places that feel like home.
